Questions and answers

How do offline maps work?

Before you head out, open Settings > Offline maps and choose Download an area. Pick the area and the map layers you want. Once it's downloaded, the map works there without signal.

Your spots, photos and notes are always on your device, so they work offline too. Things that need fresh data, like weather conditions and land overlays, show the last copy the app saved, or wait until you're back online.

How do I back up my spots, or move them to a new phone?

Use Settings > Export spots. This creates a GeoJSON file and opens your share sheet, so you can save it to Files, Google Drive, email it to yourself, or anywhere else you choose. On the new phone, use Settings > Import spots and pick the file.

Photos are not included in the export. Keep them in your photo library or copy them separately if you want them too.

Your phone's own backup (iCloud Backup or Google's device backup) may also include Forage's data, depending on your settings.

I bought Premium or Pro. How do I restore it?

Make sure you're signed in to the same Apple ID or Google account you bought with. Then tap any Premium feature to open the upgrade screen, and tap Restore purchases. Lifetime purchases and active subscriptions come back on any device signed in to that account.

How do I cancel a subscription?

Subscriptions are managed by Apple or Google, not inside the app.

  • iPhone: open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Forage.
  • Android: open the Google Play app, tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, then Forage.

Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. After cancelling, you keep paid features until the end of the period you paid for. For refunds, ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com or Google through Google Play; we can't issue refunds ourselves.

How do I delete my data?

You can delete any spot, photo or record in the app. To delete everything, uninstall Forage. That removes all of its data from the device.

There is no account and no copy on any server of ours, so there is nothing else for us to delete. Copies you exported, and your own device backups, are yours to keep or remove.

Why does Forage need my location?

To show where you are on the map, to save a spot where you stand, to record paths you walk, and to point you back to a spot with Guide me.

While you record a walk, it can keep recording with the screen off, and your phone shows that it's doing so. Your location is never sent to us or anyone else. If you say no, the app can't show your position or record walks. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Why won't the app tell me what's edible?

Because getting it wrong can make you seriously ill or worse, and no app can see what you're holding well enough to be sure. Forage is a notebook for places you already know. It never identifies species, and the assistant won't say whether something is safe to eat.

“Probably ready” is a weather-based guess about timing at a spot you have already identified. For identification, learn from local experts, field guides, and mycological or botanical societies. When in doubt, leave it. See the safety disclaimer.

Do the land and habitat overlays work outside the US?

Not yet. Public land, burn scar and forest type overlays come from U.S. federal sources and cover the United States only. Everything else works worldwide.

Does the assistant need a connection?

No. It runs on your device and only knows about your own spots and visits. On supported iPhones (iOS 26 or later) it uses Apple's on-device model, and on supported Android phones it uses Gemini Nano. On other devices it uses a simpler built-in answerer. Your questions never leave your phone.
